Este trabalho apresenta uma análise exploratória da atividade de grupos de WhatsApp associados à extrema direita brasileira, em dois momentos distintos, mais precisamente os períodos pré (16/08/2022 a 30/10/2022) e pós-eleitoral (01/11/2022 a 15/02/2023). A partir da coleta de mensagens compartilhadas em 301 grupos públicos distintos, cada período investigado foi representado por uma rede complexa. As análises dessas redes contemplaram medidas de centralidade, decomposição núcleo-periferia e detecção de comunidades. Adicionalmente, técnicas de análise de polaridade e visualizações espaciais foram utilizadas para complementar o estudo dos grupos investigados. Os resultados apontaram que o número de grupos em rede aumentou de 154 para 192 no período pós-eleitoral. O número de comunidades também aumentou, porém a modularidade caiu de 0,537 para 0,292, indicando um aumento na interconexão dos grupos. A quantidade de grupos no núcleo da rede passou de 23 para 39  (+69,6%). Foram identificadas 9 migrações da periferia para o núcleo e 5 no sentido inverso. Os grupos de maior centralidade não se mantiveram os mesmos nos dois períodos estudados. Por fim, as mensagens compartilhadas tiveram um leve incremento na polaridade.

Abstract

This study presents an exploratory analysis of the activity of Brazilian far-right WhatsApp groups across two distinct periods, namely the pre-election (August 16, 2022 to October 30, 2022) and post-election phases (November 1, 2022 to February 15, 2023). Based on a dataset comprising messages shared in 301 distinct public groups, each period under investigation was represented as a complex network. The analysis of these networks included centrality measures, core-periphery decomposition and community detection.  Additionally, polarity analysis techniques and spatial visualizations were employed to complement the study of the investigated groups. The results revealed an increase in the number of groups within the network, rising from 154 in the pre-election period to 192 in the post-election period. Although the number of communities also increased, network modularity decreased from 0.537 to 0.292, indicating greater interconnectivity among groups. The number of core groups in the network increased from 23 to 39 (+69.6%). Nine instances of migration from the periphery to the core were identified, along with five in the opposite direction. The most central groups differed between the two periods. Finally, the shared messages exhibited a slight increase in polarity.
